This prestigious recognition was awarded during the 3rd Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards, held from April 14–15, 2025, in Elzuwini, Kingdom of Eswatini, South Africa.

The accolade marks a significant milestone in the FRSC’s nearly four decades of relentless service, innovation, and dedication to reducing road traffic crashes and enhancing safety on Nigerian roads.

The Corps' consistent efforts have now earned continental recognition, positioning Nigeria as a model for road safety management across Africa.

About the Kofi Annan Road Safety Award

The Kofi Annan Road Safety Award was established by the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Road Safety,  in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation.

The award seeks to commemorate the enduring legacy of the late Kofi Annan, an African statesman and former Secretary-General of the United Nations, who was deeply committed to global humanitarian causes, including road safety.

A Badge of Honour for Nigeria

This continental recognition is not just a win for the FRSC but a proud moment for Nigeria as a whole. It underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s steadfast support for the FRSC and its vision of transforming Nigeria into a road safety benchmark for other African nations.

The award reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening institutions that save lives and protect road users nationwide.

Corps Marshal Commends National Support and Collaborative Success

In his reaction, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the award as a testament to the Corps’ unyielding passion and dedication to road safety.

He expressed gratitude to the Nigerian motoring public, stakeholders, and partners, highlighting that this achievement was made possible by the collective commitment of all road users and supporters.

This honor belongs to every Nigerian who has supported the FRSC’s mission. It is the collective energy, collaboration, and trust from the public that enabled us to achieve this remarkable feat,” said Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed.

Innovative Strategies Behind FRSC’s Success

According to the Corps Marshal, FRSC’s success is driven by several key strategies:

Innovative Road Safety Programs: Leveraging data-driven initiatives and modern traffic management systems.

Technology Deployment: Full integration of digital tools to enhance monitoring, enforcement, and response.

Stakeholder Collaboration: Building strong partnerships with local and international road safety organizations.

Community Engagement & Public Education: Promoting road safety awareness through grassroots campaigns and public sensitization programs.

Nigeria’s Leadership in Road Safety on the African Stage

The recognition by the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards further validates Nigeria’s growing leadership role in road safety and transport policy across the sub-region. It is a bold statement that Nigeria is not only implementing effective road safety strategies but is also setting a precedent for others to follow.
