SPORTS: IPC Bans Nigerian Paralympic Powerlifter Kafilat Almaruf for Three Years Over Doping Violation.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned Nigerian Para powerlifter Kafilat Almaruf for a period of three years due to a doping violation. This decision follows an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) under the IPC Anti-Doping Code, which aims to ensure a fair and clean sporting environment.

Details of the Violation:

Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF)

Almaruf's urine sample, collected during an out-of-competition test on 11 July 2024, tested positive for an anabolic agent of external origin.

   - The analysis used Gas Chromatography/Combustion/Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS), a technique that distinguishes between naturally occurring anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) and synthetic (prohibited) agents.

   - The presence of an exogenous anabolic steroid was confirmed, which is banned under the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) 2024 Prohibited List, specifically under category S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS).

Provisional Suspension

On 19 August 2024, Almaruf was provisionally suspended by the IPC while her case was being resolved.

Acceptance of Charges

The athlete admitted to the violation and accepted the consequences proposed by the IPC, which include a three-year ban from all competitive and sporting activities, except for authorized anti-doping education or rehabilitation programs.

Consequences of the Ban:

Duration

The ban is effective from 19 August 2024 to 18 August 2027.

Disqualification of Results

All competitive results achieved by Almaruf between **11 July 2024** (the date of sample collection) and **19 August 2024** (the start of her provisional suspension) have been nullified. This includes forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes she earned during this period.

Strict Liability

Athletes are held strictly responsible for substances found in their samples, regardless of intent or negligence. An ADRV is established whenever a prohibited substance or its markers are detected.

This case underlines the importance of vigilance and compliance with anti-doping regulations, as violations carry severe penalties that can impact an athlete's career and achievements.
