Just In: Rivers releases the LGA election date.

Local government elections will take place on October 5, as declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The declaration was made in the middle of the continuing dispute over local government succession that has been brought on by the parliamentarians led by Martins Amaewhule and Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

While the outgoing chairmen were still staking claims to their positions after the parliamentarians led by Martins Amaewhule extended their terms by six months, the governor appointed caretaker committees to manage the local government districts.

In anticipation of the impending Court of Appeal ruling, the police had now seized control of all 23 local government area secretariats in the state to prevent violent confrontations.
