JUST IN: Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu Impeached By Edo State House of Assembly

Edo State's Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, following an investigative panel's probe into allegations of misconduct. Despite an objection and absence from the panel, Shaibu was impeached by a vote of 18 against 1.

The Edo State House of Assembly made a significant decision on Monday, impeaching the state's Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu. The impeachment stemmed from a thorough investigation conducted by a seven-man panel tasked by the Assembly to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.

During the assembly's session, which commenced at 9:41 am, a resounding vote of 18 in favor of the impeachment, against one dissenting vote, was cast among the 20 members present. In the event of a tie, the speaker was anticipated to cast the deciding vote.

It's worth noting that the panel found Shaibu not guilty of the allegation of perjury, as it lacked substantiated evidence.

Shaibu, on April 4, contested the jurisdiction of the seven-member investigative panel, urging adherence to an interlocutory injunction issued by a Federal High Court in Abuja. Despite this objection, on April 5, the deputy governor failed to appear before the panel, which was tasked with investigating allegations of perjury and the leaking of government secrets against him.
