A Federal High Court in Lagos convicted the well-known Nigerian cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, for mutilating Naira notes.
Bobrisky was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The court, presided over by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, convicted him after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The sentencing is scheduled for April 9, and Bobrisky has been remanded in EFCC custody until then.
The EFCC had filed a six-count charge against Bobrisky, focusing on alleged tampering with Naira notes and money laundering.
During the trial, Bobrisky admitted to the offenses, and the court struck out two of the counts. The prosecution presented evidence, including videos of Bobrisky mutilating Naira notes, and the defense did not object.
Despite Bobrisky's plea for mercy and promise to educate his followers about the law, the court reserved sentencing and ordered him to remain in EFCC custody. Defense counsel requested a non-custodial sentence for Bobrisky.
