After battling a rare brain ailment, Law & Order star Paul D'Amato passes away at the age of 76.

The actor, who costarred with Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter and portrayed Tim "D Hook" McCracken in the film Slap Shot, was afflicted with a severe brain illness.

Additionally, D'Amato portrayed a variety of personas in a number of well-known Law & Order series episodes.

His fiancée Marina Re told The Hollywood Reporter, "He was the most wonderful, sweetest guy, he fought so hard against this horrendous disease."

D'Amato played hockey for the hockey team while attending Emerson College in the US Army before pursuing acting.

D'Amato was reared in Spencer, Massachusetts, after being born in Worcester. At the age of 14, he began working as a stagehand, which gave him the idea to pursue acting.

D'Amato played ice hockey for the Boston-based Emerson College ice hockey club and was an athlete as well as an actor.

Throughout the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, D'Amato maintained his career with appearances on Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. 

In 2009, he made his most recent appearance on the ABC dramatic comedy The Unusuals.

In addition, D'Amato participated in a number of charitable golf competitions and sporting events. He competed in the Enfield tournament for almost ten years, helping to collect money for scholarships.
