Sheriff Kevin McMahill, addressing a press conference on Wednesday night, confirmed the deaths of three individuals, withholding their identities, while a fourth victim is reported to be in stable condition after sustaining gunshot wounds. Additionally, four people are hospitalized for panic attacks, and two officers received treatment for minor injuries.
President Joe Biden, responding to the shooting, expressed sorrow over another instance of gun violence on a college campus.
He highlighted the abnormality of such incidents and emphasized the need for decisive action against the ongoing epidemic of gun violence, citing alarming statistics of over 600 mass shootings and around 40,000 deaths due to gun violence in the current year alone.
McMahill commended the "heroic" officer who intervened but couldn't specify the weapon used. Biden urged bipartisan efforts in Congress to address the issue, calling for measures such as banning assault weapons, implementing universal background checks, and advancing other sensible gun control measures.
Adam Garcia, director of university police services, reported the initial 911 call at 11:45 am and confirmed the suspect's death after engagement with responding officers. As a precaution, the entire Nevada higher education system closed campuses.
A substantial police presence, including tactical teams, responded to the college following an alert instructing students to 'RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.'
The Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop at Harry Reid International Airport in response to the incident.
