Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, recently brought attention to a concerning issue within Nigeria's construction industry. During a budget defense session with Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Oshiomhole disclosed that foreign prisoners are reportedly engaged in construction work on Nigerian soil.
According to Oshiomhole, these foreign prisoners are receiving wages based on the minimum pay rates of their respective countries. Expressing his worry about the situation, he called upon the Minister of Interior to enhance the regulation of quotas issued to foreigners.
"I have it on good authority that prisoners from foreign lands are working in Nigeria as construction workers," Oshiomhole said.
He went on to describe the scope of the problem, stating that some non-Nigerians are living in the country, typically in containers.
These individuals, employed by the construction industry, are allegedly paid according to the minimum wage standards of their home countries.
