In the midst of controversy surrounding Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia's appointment of caretaker committees, the state assembly has confirmed the nominees.
This move is in direct defiance of the Senate's call on the Federal Government to withhold statutory allocations from local councils not democratically elected nationwide.
The Senate's resolution, prompted by Senator Abba Moro's motion during Friday's plenary, emphasizes the violation of the 1999 Constitution by replacing elected councils with caretaker committees.
Despite this, the Benue State Assembly proceeded to confirm 21 out of the 23 nominees, while those from Oju and Obi were stepped down.
The Senate urges Governor Alia to review the dissolution of councils, the formation of caretaker committees, and reinstate elected officials.
