The labor unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have initiated a nationwide strike following the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero. Continue reading
The announcement was made during a briefing in Abuja, where the NLC and TUC leaders presented a 6-point demand to the Federal Government.
This demand includes the immediate removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Area Commander, and other implicated officers, accused of brutalizing and humiliating Ajaero and other workers.
The nationwide strike is set to begin on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. It's worth noting that Ajaero, the NLC President, was reportedly captured and subjected to brutal treatment during a labor protest in Imo State.
He was taken away by the Nigerian Police Force and later reappeared with visible injuries on his face, indicating that he had been physically assaulted.
Addressing the situation, the NLC Publicity Secretary, Benson Upah, explained that Ajaero's injuries were severe, preventing him from receiving adequate treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri.
Consequently, there is a necessity to transport him abroad for medical care. This incident prompted the labor unions to declare the nationwide strike in protest.
