The city's emergency situations department stated that carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of the deaths.

The department released a statement saying, "13 dead were initially discovered in the courserse of reconnaissance and extinguishing the fire; their identities are being established." "They appear to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning."

On Thursday morning, just after 5:30 am (2330 GMT Wednesday), the fire was reported. It began in a three-story residential building's basement. 

59 of the 72 guests at the hostel at the time of the fire were successfully evacuated, according to the emergency department.

By 6:22 a.m., the fire was completely out.

The origin of the fire is being looked into by the authorities.
