After Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr called for a march "in solidarity of Gaza" and "against Israel," the demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square and yelled, "No to the occupation! According to a journalist at AFP, "No to America!"

They hoisted Palestinian and Iraqi flags as a big Israeli flag was placed on the ground for the demonstrators to tread on.

One of the protest's organizers, Abu Kayan, stated that "this rally is meant to condemn what is happening in occupied Palestine, the bloodletting and the oppression of rights."

The Moqtada Sadr movement has put strong security precautions in place at the demonstration site, and there are numerous Iraqi security troops stationed nearby.

Even though he is not an official member of the government, the ferocious Shiite priest wields considerable political power.

However, the Iraqi government is in favor of the Gaza support movement and supports the Palestinian cause.

Israel has started a battle to "destroy" Hamas after the Palestinian Islamists invaded Israel's southern border over the weekend, killing more than 1,200 Palestinians in the streets and their homes.

Since then, Israel has frequently bombed locations belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip, killing 1,537 Palestinians.

The Israeli army gave inhabitants of Gaza City a 24-hour notice to vacate their houses and move south of the blockaded region for "their safety."
