The BBC quoted him as saying, "I admit it took us some time to really understand and verify that report, and it was hard to believe that even Hamas could perform such a barbaric act."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made allegations of severe acts committed by the attackers, including tying children and shooting them, burning people alive, raping women, and beheading troops.

Rescuers and witnesses have reported disturbing events, such as the massacre of senior citizens and the discovery of rooms filled with slain civilians.

Another IDF spokesperson, Lt Col Richard Hecht, acknowledged the reports about child beheadings but did not confirm their validity, attributing the information to a journalist who spoke with IDF soldiers.

Netanyahu referred to the Hamas actions in strong terms, likening them to Nazi cruelty and stating that they should be treated as worse than ISIS.

The situation is exacerbated by the thousands of missiles fired into Israel and the holding of Israeli hostages by Gaza militants.
