EU issues sanction threat against Niger following military coup

The coup in Niger has been strongly condemned by the European Union (EU), which maintains that the recent events in the West African nation represent a severe assault on stability and democracy.

Additionally, it issued a stern warning that any violation of the ousted leader's fundamental rights will result in the suspension of support for the struggling nation.

The EU released a statement on Friday that was signed by Josep Borrell, the High Representative.

"This coup is in total violation of the democratic principles on which the management of political power in the region is based," the speaker added in reference to ECOWAS' most recent news release.

Reiterating its support for the organization's actions in the area and the ongoing initiatives to enable an immediate return to constitutional order, the EU.

It demanded that President Bazoum's safety and mobility be fully guaranteed and stated that any violation of the constitutional order would have negative effects on the EU and Niger's collaboration, including the immediate suspension of all budget support. We shall continue to work closely with the leaders of ECOWAS.

However, the EU asserted that it stands with the Nigerese people and confirms its unequivocal dedication to the rigorous observance of international humanitarian law, the rule of law, and human rights in the nation.
