New Naira Scarcity: Tension in warri as protests rock streets

Banks in Warri, Delta State, had to unexpectedly stop operating as protests raged around the city.

As they burned tyres along the constantly congested roads to express their rage, the protesters surrounded the entrances of the United Bank for Africa and Union Bank for Africa, which are both located close to the Main Market in Warri. This caused significant gridlock.

In protest of the suffering brought on by the lack of the new naira notes and the increase in gasoline prices, the demonstrators, who were primarily market women, youths, and seniors, had blocked up major routes.

The NPA Expressway and the Warri-Sapele Road are two of the blocked off routes. To voice their complaints, the demonstrators marched to the Delta State Rainbow Television, Edjeba.

The nonviolent demonstrators complained that it was difficult to withdraw money from their bank accounts while holding placards and singing, "Our fish dey decay, our food dey rotten."

They said that the Central Bank of Nigeria's cashless policy and the limited supply of the newly designed naira notes had prevented them from selling their items over the previous several days.
