75 people killed by a flood and a windstorm in Yobe, 6,592 people displaced.

In the past six months, 75 people have died in 255 communities due to flooding brought on by strong winds, according to Dr. Mohammed Goje, executive secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Goje revealed this to reporters in Damaturu when he discussed the extent of the disaster's damage in the state's 17 local government areas.

In some of the most damaged regions of Bade, Karasuwa, Jakusko, Gujba, and Gulani, he continued, the flood had also washed away 10 significant roadways and forced 6,592 people to leave their homes.

According to Goje, the destructive flood and windstorm were directly responsible for the 75 recorded deaths, and many more lives were at risk in ten local government regions. Additionally, more than 200 people had injuries of varied severity and received free medical care.

"The floods have wreaked the most havoc on those who live in flood-prone areas and near waterways.

"Preliminary reports and desk reviews revealed that numerous WASH facilities and 92 water points had been impacted thus far. Particularly in Jakusko, Bade, Gulani, Mutai, and Geidam, this is of extreme concern.

"Water is not receding at all or is receding at a very slow pace in these and many other areas," he said.

However, the Executive Secretary bemoaned the difficulty in providing life-saving assistance in many of the affected communities, particularly in Gulani, Gujba, Tarmuwa, and Jakusko where access routes have been cut off.

The good news is that three of the ten highways are now accessible after Governor Mai Mala Buni ordered quick rehabilitation and the supply of alternate routes.

According to him, SEMA is working around the clock to support the impacted communities as instructed by the state governor, with other frontline ministries and agencies as well as the local volunteers.
