The presidency has denied reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which has been examined.
Remember that as of Saturday evening, there were rumours that the President, who was on his way to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, had signed the bill into law, a scenario that alarmed some.
On Saturday, an internet site produced a story saying that the President had already signed the measure, which was delivered to him last week Friday.
However, sources within the White House told a DAILY POST writer that the story was untrue.
The source clarified that the bill could not have been signed in secret, especially because the president was out of the country and is due to return later today from the UAE.
Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, who recently returned to the country with the President, said the news of the signing, which had already gone viral on social media, was unknown to him, adding, "it is news to me too."
In a similar event, Umar El-Yakub, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters in the House of Representatives, disputed the information, emphasising that the viral news could not be accurate and providing reasons for his judgement.
El-Yakub stated that the President "couldn't have signed it yesterday because he was out of the country, and he couldn't have signed it already because he's just entering the nation."
"I also cannot tell you if he will still sign it or not. He is President. But if it's signed later, we'll all know," he remarked.
