The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced Jose Peseiro's selection as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, the country's senior men's football team, on Sunday.
In a statement, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire said Peseiro's appointment is effective immediately and is contingent on the signing of agreed-upon agreements between him and the Federation.
Finidi George, a former Nigeria international forward, will be Peseiro's First Assistant, while Salisu Yusuf, a former Super Eagles midfielder, will be his Second Assistant, according to the NFF.
Yusuf will also lead the Nigerian team to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) as well as the Under-23 National Teams.
"Usman Abdallah will serve as the Third Assistant, and Eboboritse Uwejamomere will serve as the Match Analyst."
"Ike Shorounmu, another former Nigeria international, will be the Goalkeepers' Trainer," Olajire said.
He also revealed that José Vitor dos Santos Peseiro, who turned 62 in April, is a Portuguese striker from his playing days.
He has extensive coaching experience with clubs and national teams on four continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.
"An educator with a degree in Physical Education/Sports Sciences, Peseiro has advanced coaching skills and experience.
He has worked as an assistant coach for Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest, Sporting Braga, Victoria Guimaraes, Al-Hilal, Al-Wahda, Al-Ahly Cairo, Sharjah FC, and Real Madrid.
The Portuguese also served as Head Coach of the Saudi Arabian and Venezuelan National Teams, according to the NFF.
During the Super Eagles' next tour of the United States, Peseiro is slated to take charge for the first time.
After firing Gernot Rohr in December, the NFF named Peseiro as the Super Eagles' substantive head coach.
After the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, Peseiro was anticipated to take over as coach of the Super Eagles.
Following the Super Eagles' elimination from the AFCON, Augustine Eguavoen was granted the post on an interim basis.
The NFF reportedly hired Peseiro after receiving a recommendation from fellow Portuguese Jose Mourinho.
Amaju Pinnick, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, had already confirmed that Mourinho was consulted when scouting for Rohr's replacement.
