There is unrest in Lagos' Ojo Local Government Area following police attempts to enforce the state government's ban on commercial motorbike operators, better known as Okada riders.
Following the killing of a sound engineer, David Imoh, at Lekki, the state government ordered a total ban on Okada riders' activities in six local government areas of the state on Wednesday.
According to the Daily Trust, police officers from Onireke Police Station in Ojo have impounded some commercial motorcycles for operating on the Mile 2 – Badagry expressway, a move that the riders have protested.
The motorcyclists attempted to storm the station, perhaps releasing some of their members who had been detained by police.
Due to the commotion, the riders set fire to the middle of the road, while vehicle owners abandoned their vehicles by the side of the road.
As a result of the incident, pedestrians ran in fear of getting trapped in the crossfire.
Furthermore, the incident caused heavy traffic on both sides of the road.
While the authorities fired six shots into the air to disperse the commercial motorbike operators, the riders showered them with stones, challenging the officers to pursue them.
As they attempted to flee the problem zone, an unknown number of people were injured.
A joint force of anti-riot police officers and soldiers has been dispatched to the area to restore normalcy.
