In many religions, blasphemy is punishable by death, according to Captain Jamil Abubakar, the son of a former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.
Deborah Samuel, a Christian student in Sokoto State, was stoned to death and burned for supposed blasphemy by some of her Muslim classmates.
This has prompted outrage as well as conflicting comments.
Jamil, a pilot who is married to Aliko Dangote's daughter and is a millionaire businessman, took to Twitter on Friday night, May 13, to discuss the sentence for blasphemy.
"We were never taught to denigrate any of the book, or any of the prophets from Adam through Muhammad SAW & the Quran," he wrote.
Blasphemy is punishable by death! Most religions, including Christianity, believe this.
He added: "These cases are handled by the Sharia court in Islam. Islam established laws and regulations to regulate people's actions and motives, ensuring that the wrongdoers are not tricked and justice is administered properly."
a public figure, Osi called Jamil's tweet into doubt, writing: "I'm completely stunned. Do you really believe it's okay to kill someone for blasphemy?"
Jamil said, " "My personal viewpoint has no bearing on the rules in place, Osi. I'm not the sharia court, and I didn't make them. I am a follower of Islam. I do not advocate for violence.
The law will always be the law. So this isn't about my opinion! The laws have always been in place. Find out more about Blasphemy.
