Senator Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo state, was arrested at his house in Maitama, Abuja, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a statement, the anti-graft agency's spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said the move was prompted by the former governor's reluctance to honour invitations after jumping the Commission's administrative bail.
"On January 24, 2022, the EFCC filed a 17-count criminal case against Okorocha for diversion of public monies and properties to the tune of N2.9 billion," Uwajaren said.
"The matter was referred to Honourable Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, but attempts to arraign Senator Okorocha were repeatedly halted due to the ex-refusal governor's to be served with proceedings."
"At the latest adjourned date, March 28th, 2022, Justice Ekwo warned that it was "the last adjournment I shall grant in this matter" before adjourning till May 30th, 2022.
"Given the circumstances, the Commission has no choice but to order Senator Okorocha's arrest and prosecution."
