The time for political parties to hold primaries has been extended by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This was stated by the commission in a statement released on Friday.
After meeting with the leaders of the 18 registered political parties, the election umpires decided to extend the deadline.
The Inter Party Advisory Commission (IPAC) had requested a week extension for political parties to complete their presidential conventions and primaries, according to the report.
Engr Yabagi Yusuf Sani, chairman of IPAC, has petitioned INEC to reschedule the primaries for June 3rd.
"I want to thank you for allowing us the very formal time to meet with you once more on the matter of how the parties can engage with you to achieve a crisis-free election as we hold our primaries," Sani added.
INEC responded by stating that it has allowed political parties a further six days to complete their primaries.
It recommended policymakers to hold their primaries between June 4 and June 9, 2022.
"However, the parties have now pleaded with the Commission to use the 6-day period between the 4th and 9th June 2022 to conclude outstanding primaries and prepare to upload the list of candidates and their affidavits on the INEC Candidates Nomination Portal, based on the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election."
"During this time, the Commission did not plan any specific activities." From June 10th to 17th, 2022, the goal is to simply provide parties time to assemble the list and personal information of their nominated candidates before uploading them to the INC Candidates Nomination Portal."
