Mr Mahamat Annadif, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, expressed his sympathies to Nigeria over the illegal refinery explosion in Imo on Monday.
Annadif said in New York that he learned about the catastrophic accident at a gasoline refinery in Imo on Friday with great sadness.
At least 100 people were murdered in an explosion in the Abaeze forest in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
Meanwhile, the refinery's death toll has grown to 110, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Mr Ifeanyi Nnaji, the acting head of the agency's Imo/Abia Operations Office, told NAN on Monday that other remains had been discovered near the scene in the Orashi River.
He stated that plans were being made for a mass burial of the bodies.
Nnaji also stated that NEMA would issue an official report on the incident as soon as possible.
