The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has commenced the process of disconnecting government offices in Niger State due to a debt of N1.9 billion owed to the company by the state.
During an experiment conducted over the Easter weekend, AEDC workers disconnected a number of state facilities, including the House of Assembly building, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, and the state's water board.
As of Tuesday, April 19, the majority of the affected offices were powered by generators when they reopened for business.
According to a document released on Friday by the AEDC regional manager in Minna, the debt had accrued over an eight-year period and that the offices would not be reconnected until the obligation was satisfied. According to the statement, the immediate former administration left a debt of $343 million, and the government has incurred a total debt of N1.9 billion since June 2015, according to the statement.
In its statement, it noted that efforts to collect the debt had been unsuccessful thus far.
