Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, has rescinded letters of promotion previously handed to various Ibadan chiefs.
Three letters of promotion were issued to three persons who were scheduled for promotion in both the Balogun and Olubadan lines, according to bendelnews.
One of the Mogajis received a letter of promotion from Mogaji to Jagun Olubadan, while two other Mogajis received two letters of promotion from Mogaji to Jagun Balogun.
According to Ibadan tradition, anyone aspiring to be an Olubadan must first serve as the Mogaji of his family property.
After that, the Mogaji will be promoted to Jagun Balogun or Jagun Olubadan. Such a person will then progress up the ladder and eventually become Olubadan.
The role of Jagun Balogun is supposed to be filled by one person, but residents of the old city were taken aback when they discovered two letters of promotion from Mogaji to Jagun Balogun had been granted to two different people.
The development is raising consternation in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The Olubadan, on the other hand, has retracted the three letters.
The controversial letters were issued owing to an administrative error, according to the king.
In a statement acquired by bendelnews on Wednesday, the Olubadan palace indicated that the monarch acknowledged to the administrative blunder.
"Following the difficulties surrounding Jagun's appointment to the two ruling lines of Olubadan chieftaincy title, (Olubadan and Balogun), the three letters ostensibly emanating from the Palace have been revoked," the monarch said.
"On Tuesday, three letters were flying on social media, two for Jagun Balogun and one for Jagun Olubadan. Despite this, there are only two vacancies in each of the two lines, one in each.
"Oba Balogun, on the other hand, told the aspiring Jaguns that the development was only a temporary measure and not the end of the road," emphasising that the vacancies will be filled in due time.
He urged them to be calm while the faults were being fixed, assuring them that the cancellation would not be construed as a denial.
