Facebook Blocked Amid Ukraine-Russia Invasion

#Russia blocked Facebook in the country on Friday, the #media regulator said, more than a week after #Moscow invaded #Ukraine.

"On March 4, 2022, it was decided to block access to Facebook (owned by Meta) on the territory of the Russian Federation," Roskomnadzor stated, citing "26 instances of Facebook discrimination against Russian media."

Additionally, an AFP journalist in Moscow confirmed that while Facebook was unavailable, Facebook-owned Instagram remained accessible.

The move was part of a government crackdown on independent media and activists that has been unprecedented since the Russian invasion began.

The country's last remaining liberal media outlets have been shuttered in recent days, and a new law imposing stiff penalties for publishing "fake news" about the Ukraine war has compelled others to avoid covering the subject.

#Roskomnadzor accused #Facebook of 26 instances of "discrimination" against Kremlin-aligned news organisations since October 2020, alleging that the platform restricted their accounts, infringing on Russians' rights and #freedoms.
