Because he wanted his first child to be a boy, the father'shoots dead his seven-day-old newborn girl to death.

Police in Pakistan say that a father has been arrested on suspicion of shooting dead his daughter, who was just seven days old. He wanted his first child to be male.

In Urdu, Jannat, which means "heaven" in English, is the name of a newborn girl who was shot five times on Monday at her home in the central city of Mianwali, police say.

The suspect, named Shahzaib Khan, is said to have broken into his house and told his wife to give him Jannat, then shot the week-old baby to death.

Shahzaib, who has been married for two years, then ran away from the scene, police say. He was arrested on Thursday in a nearby district.

Mail Online says that in parts of Pakistan, tribal traditions say that baby girls can be seen as a betrayal of manhood, and this can happen in some places.

He is the girl's maternal uncle, Hidayatullah Khan. He filed a formal complaint against the person who killed her.

Hidayatullah said that the father was angry when a baby girl was born.

Shahzaib had not come back to the family home after he learned that his wife had given birth to a girl and refused to accept her, a relative said.

Hidayatullah said that the suspect came into the family home where relatives had gathered and asked his wife to give him Jannat. He told her to do that.

"He took the girl into his hands and shot her dead,' he said to Dawn.

If you move closer to the suspect, he'll shoot you, says Hidayatullah, who says that's what he did when he tried to take the baby away from Shahzaib.

The case caused a lot of anger in Pakistan, where people said the death of the newborn baby was "cruel."

People say that this is "beyond barbaric." Tehseen Qasim wrote on Twitter: "The only way to stop this cruelty is to hang him in public."

In my heart, I'm disgusted to the core. I am very sorry for the mother. She had a beautiful daughter. When Misbah Munir tweeted, "Women will rule the world in 2022."
