At least 26 people killed and many injured as gunmen stormed a Taraba community.

At least 26 persons have been reported slain and numerous others injured by suspected armed herders in the Tor-Damisa hamlet in Taraba State's Donga Local Government Area.
According to reports, the attack killed children and women.

According to Punch, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday and resulted in the destruction of hundreds of residences and properties worth millions of naira.

The attack was described as a retaliatory attack following an alleged shooting in the leg of a Fulani man in the region by a suspected Tiv farmer, who is currently undergoing treatment and being held by authorities.

Zaki Ugondo Uma, the community's village head, claimed that there was some miscommunication between Fulani herders and some Tiv farmers in the community and that he made frantic efforts with Fulani officials to restore normalcy.

"A few farmers had a disagreement with Fulani herders, but we reached a truce and they assured us of peace," he explained. I am stunned as we awoke this morning to discover a major attack on our neighbourhood, which impacted over 15 communities.

At the time of this writing, we have not retrieved all bodies, but more than 26 have been recovered. We are in a state of dread, as we have no idea whether the attack will continue."

I am pleading with the state to offer protection and assistance with essential items for the thousands of people who have been rendered homeless," Uma added.

Confirming the occurrence, ASP Usman Abubakar of the Taraba State Command's Police Public Relations Unit stated that the command was aware of the situation but had not yet determined the origin of the crisis or the number of casualties.
