Prior to the general election in 2023, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, or RCCG, has established a national directorate for political and governmental affairs.
A memo dated February 28 and acquired by the newspaper reveals the purpose of the transfer.
Pastor J. F. Odesola, the Assistant General Overseer (Admin and Personnel) of the RCCG, issued the memo to pastors in charge of RCCG regions and provinces across Nigeria.
"The core of this directorate is to help coordinate the engagement of our people who are willing to get involved in politics, as well as generate support for them when necessary," states the memo.
At first glance, it appears to have been a move to help Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who had previously served as one of Nigeria's leading pastors.
Osinbajo, who has yet to declare his candidacy for the presidency, may be one of the contenders for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential ticket.
Supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari have been urging him to take over as head of state in order to save Nigeria from its current economic catastrophe.
