A'mentally ill' man suspected of kidnapping perished after jumping off a bridge in Ibadan's Molete neighbourhood in an attempt to flee an enraged mob who had set him on fire.
On Tuesday, February 15, the man was reportedly seen receiving a package from unidentified people in a private vehicle on the Molete overhead bridge.
The suspect was approached by a throng after the vehicle drove away, beaten, and set ablaze, according to an eyewitness.
In an attempt to flee the mob, he plunged from the flyover and died as a result of his injuries.
The mob's attack on the eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, was motivated by some objects retrieved from the corpse, according to the eyewitness.
The things reported by the eyewitness included a N7 million check, an iPhone, and a cutlass.
"This afternoon, I was in my shop beneath the bridge when we observed the mentally ill man fall down from the bridge after the mob had lit him ablaze. I wasn't sure what happened on the bridge between them, but I saw him when he leapt down with flames on his body.
"While the victim was rolling in pain on the ground, the mob was observed pouring petrol on him."
"I am not in favour of jungle justice because we don't know if anything suspicious was found on him, yet the mob claimed a N7 million cheque and an iPhone after inspecting his body." Added the witness
