More information about the 25kg cocaine bust involving suspended police officer DCP Abba Kyari has been released by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Femi Babafemi, the agency's Media Director, stated that the agency conducted an evidence-based investigation and that misrepresentation of facts would not undermine the agency's resolve.
NDLEA officers at the Enugu airport, according to the police, were working for the cartel and the smuggler who entered from Addis Ababa.
Part of the transcript of Kyari's taped discussion with the undercover cop and a piece of ASP James Bawa's police testimony were released by Babafemi.
The official claimed Kyari's squad had established contact with the cartel and how their ring operates on Wednesday.
"After the NDLEA asked Kyari and others for interrogation, the police questioned them and gave them over, along with the report of their interrogation.
According to the police investigation report, ASP James Bawa stated that "he was called by an informant identified as IK from Brazil who advised him that a drug courier would be arriving onboard Ethiopian Airlines in Enugu."
"A pointer from IK, the Brazil-based informant, met with him outside the airport around 1420 hours on January 19, 2022 and showed him a picture of the courier," he continued.
"They then spotted the suspect exiting the airport terminal after completing all arrival clearance processes, and he was apprehended with another associate," he said.
"They are greedy, extremely greedy (referring to his informants), we attempted to get them to accept 40% but they refused, except 50%, they know the rudiment of the trade very well, they are the ones who handle the packing," Kyari told undercover investigators, according to Babafemi.
"One of the informants accompanied it to Ethiopia from Brazil. You see, one of the informants accompanied the products to Ethiopia, and he is one of the informants who provides us with information. He is the grandson of the great baron.
"It will be handed to people who want to go further with it from Addis, and he will obtain their photos without their awareness." Yes, he will reveal people who are spreading it further, secretly take photos of them, and email them to us (Kyari's crew).
"So we already know the items, the photo, and the clothes they're wearing, hope that makes sense; we know your name, and he'll tell us everything." So, immediately, my squad will be waiting for you, and when they see you, they will arrest you."
"Yes, yes," Kyari answered in response to an officer's question about whether his boys are generally stationed inside or outside the airport.
"Some are on the outer, while others are on the inside. They will only let you to complete your arrival formalities before arresting you as soon as you go.
