Lawan, the Senate President Of Nigeria, has called for the traditional rulers' role in Nigeria's constitution to be codified.

On Saturday in Ilorin, Senate President Ahmed Lawan urged for the correct capture of traditional rulers' functions in the country's constitution.

He said traditional rulers deserved adequately defined roles and acknowledgment to enable them to fulfil their jobs better during a courtesy call on the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu Gambari, at his palace in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ola Awoniyi, the Senate President believes that "traditional rulers must have a role and a better and clearly official role and function in our constitution, so that we can have an inclusive governance structure that will ensure that our royal fathers do what they are doing today in a more official manner," and that "traditional rulers must have a role and better and clearly official role and function in our constitution, so that we can have an inclusive governance structure

Senator Lawan stated that traditional institutions play a critical and major role in the stabilisation of communities and societies in the northern portion of the country, as well as throughout the country.

He stated that the National Assembly feels that their functions should be recognised and adequately recorded in the Federal Republic of Nigeria's constitution.

He went on to say that traditional institutions have always existed and have existed longer than political institutions.

In response to the Federal Government's security challenges, he stated that conventional institutions would be required to ensure citizen mobilisation in order to accomplish the desired objective.

Traditional rulers, according to the Emir of Ilorin, are not seeking legislative or judicial duties, but rather advisory roles, as they have no desire to compete with any political institution.

Senator President Bukola Saraki was in Ilorin with six other senators to attend the opening of Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar's 2022 empowerment initiative, which he represents in the state's Kwara North Senatorial District.
