In Mexico, a 2-year-old girl died tragically after consuming a toxic cookie that was allegedly thrown at her family's barking dog to kill it.
On Feb. 1, Heidy Valeria, who lived near Guadalajara in Tototlan, Jalisco, central-western Mexico, was brought to a local hospital after suffering two respiratory crises reportedly caused by eating the toxic cookie dog treat.
Heidy died after two days of fighting for her life.
After eating a poisoned dog treat meant to kill a dog, a toddler dies.
Heidy's cause of death is unknown, according to Council General Secretary Epigmenio Carrillo, but the family dog had similar problems.
Carrillo went on to say that the death is under investigation by police, and that once the details of the case are known, authorities will release them.
Despite Epigmenio Carrillo's assertion that the child's cause of death is unknown, several Tototlan villagers expressed concern on Facebook that Heidy had been poisoned accidently.
"The reality is, the news has startled the entire community, and social media erupted when it became known what had happened," a local remarked.
Residents in Tototlan claimed on social media that the girl was poisoned by a neighbour who planned to damage the family dog.
Epigmenio Carrillo also revealed that another youngster, aged six, had been rushed to the hospital due to intoxication caused by an unknown chemical. It's unclear whether the two cases are connected.
According to The Sun, activist and influencer Arturo Islas Allende said, "We lost Valeria, a two-year-old girl, due of some unscrupulous characters who tossed poisoned cookies in Tototlan, Jalisco. Those guys should be in jail."
