Breaking:Buhari orders 5G network to combat insecurity

The National Policy on Fifth Generation (5G) Technology for Nigeria's Digital Economy was launched by President Muhammadu Buhari.

All security institutions have been directed by the President to use the new technology as soon as possible to improve national security.

He stated that the Federal Government will maximise the benefits of 5G for the nation's economy, security, and well-being.

He delivered remarks at a presentation of the national 5G policy, which was adopted by the Federal Executive Council.

Buhari also assuaged concerns about 5G's health risks, saying that such concerns have been "well handled" in the development of a policy that is appropriate for Nigeria.

On the advantages of 5G technology, the President stated that it can assist practically every sector of the economy, including increased connection, greater healthcare, support for education, smart city development, and agricultural growth, among other things.

"It will also let security institutions communicate in real time," he added.

"5G technology is substantially faster than previous digital technologies, and it allows for communication in near real time." This has the potential to help us accelerate our efforts to improve national security.

"It will allow our security institutions to utilise robotics, autonomous vehicles, augmented and virtual reality to efficiently solve any security concerns we encounter."

The National 5G Policy, he continued, contains a rollout plan to ensure that key cities around the country benefit from the technology.

Buhari went on to say that the policy is in accordance with his administration's commitment to promoting the digital economy as a means of diversifying the economy.

As Nigeria continues to roll out the technology, he reassured investors that the Federal Government will continue to create an enabling environment for their enterprises to prosper.

President Muhammadu Buhari has authorised Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, to oversee the policy's implementation, which is being carried out by the Nigerian Communications Commission with the help of other government agencies.

The President also took advantage of the opportunity to outline how his administration has established a climate that encourages investment in Nigeria's digital economy.

He recalled that the road to the launch of the 5G National Policy began with the November 2019 launch of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, as well as the launch of a number of policies to strengthen the digital economy, such as the Nigerian National Broadband Plan and the National Policy for the Promotion of Indigenous Content in the Nigerian Telecommunications Sector.
