Ahmet Ylmaz Calik, a Turkish footballer, was murdered in a horrific vehicle accident while on his way to plan his wedding during a day off from training.

Ahmet Y?lmaz Calik, a Turkey international footballer and Konyaspor star, died in a horrific car accident on Tuesday, according to his club. He was 27 years old at the time.

The 28-year-old defender was killed after losing control of his car near Gölba?? in Ankara, Turkey's capital. Before the crash, he was on his way to plan his wedding on a day off from Konyaspor training.

In a statement, the Turkish Football Federation said: "We learned with great grief that Ahmet Calik, a football player for Ittifak Holding Konyaspor who also played for our National Team, died in a traffic accident.

"May Allah have mercy on the deceased; our sympathies go out to his family, relatives, Ittifak Holding Konyaspor Club, and the Turkish football community."

Lukas Podolski, a former Galatasaray and Arsenal forward, paid tribute on Twitter, writing: "I'm extremely sorry to hear the news, I'm in shock." Death isn't for you, brother! May your house be blessed.

Calik, known for his athleticism and strong defence, had a successful club and international career, representing Turkey at the UEFA under-19 Championship and FIFA under-20 World Cup in 2013.
