As the coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has been fired by the Nigerian Football Federation.
As a result, Augustine Eguavoen, who is currently the football federation's Technical Director, was named as the technical adviser for the Nigerian Super Eagles on a short-term deal.
"This is effective right now, and comes after the end of the relationship with Gernot Rohr, who has been in charge of Nigeria's three-time African champions for 64 months and is the country's longest-serving manager," the Nigeria Football Federation said in a statement on Sunday. Rohr, a Franco-German, has been in charge of Nigeria for 64 months.
"After a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday, it was decided that Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach), Paul Aigbogun (Answers Coach), Joseph Yobo (Answers Coach), Dr. Terry Eguaoje (Answers Coach), and Aloysius Agu (Answers Coach)" (Goalkeeper Trainer).
They have hired Augustine "Jay Jay" Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal to help the team with technical and public relations issues.
The statement said that the NFF's General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, thanked the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports for working with and guiding him all the way through.
It has come to an end between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr Rohr. This is how it goes: "We want to say thank you to him for what he did for the Super Eagles and Nigeria," said the man.
Ex-Nigerian captain Eguavoen was the coach of the team at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The team came third, and Eguavoen was in charge of the team. The Super Eagles won their first away Africa Cup, in Tunisia, 27 years ago. He was the team's on-field captain at the time.
After that, he will be in charge of the team as it starts to work on its preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon from January 9th to February 6th, 2022.
