On Monday, December 13, former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was allegedly beaten and robbed of money and jewellery at his house in Portugal.
After his team's match against Famalico on Sunday, Otamendi, 33, who now plays for Benfica, was attacked in Lisbon
Four assailants are accused of assaulting Otamendi, putting a belt around his neck, and stealing money and valuables.
Michele, the Argentine's wife, and their son were reportedly at home at the time of the attack.
The invaders greeted Otamendi as he returned home after Benfica's 4-1 victory over Famalico, according to the Correio de Manha storey. Before a belt was placed around his neck, he was assaulted.
During the robbery, Otamendi was reportedly dragged into a room with his 'panicked' wife and children.
Benfica acknowledged in a statement to Portuguese station Record that the player was robbed on Monday morning.
'Sport Lisboa e Benfica confirms that their player Nico Otamendi was robbed at his residence in the early hours of today,' according to the statement.
'Despite the immense discomfort created by the situation they are in, the footballer and his family are doing well.
'Sport Lisboa e Benfica requests that the privacy of the footballer and his family be respected by all media outlets while authorities perform their investigations.'
The police investigation into the attack is alleged to have already begun.
After winning two Premier League titles in England, Otamendi relocated to Portugal in the summer of 2020.
