Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Law of Lagos State 2021 yesterday, prohibiting the parade of suspects in front of the media.
The amendment law was originally passed in Lagos State in 2007 and revised in 2011 (more than ten years ago) to ensure that suspects and others who come into touch with the legal system are protected under the Constitution's Fundamental Rights.
“The provisions include: conducting criminal proceedings through an audio and video conferencing platform, powers of the Chief Magistrate to visit Police Stations, prohibition of media parades of suspects, compensation to crime victims, protective measures for victims and witnesses, and the establishment of a Crime Data Register and the Criminal Justice Sector Reform Committee to restructure the criminal justice system,” Onigbanjo said.
“This reaffirms Governor Babajide Sanwo-commitment to the promotion of law and order, the protection of citizens' rights, the decongestion of our correctional facilities, and the establishment of a crime-free community.
