Following a deadly bandit attack on one of its trains, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended services on the Abuja-Kaduna rail route.

The suspension was issued on October 21, 2021, shortly after a former senator, Shehu Sani, claimed that a train he was aboard had broken down after running over an explosive.

"The board and management wish to advise the general public that on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line (AK10) on October 20, there was an explosion on the rail track that impacted the fuel tank of the Locomotive," the NRC said in a statement acquired by SaharaReporters. The problem, however, has been brought under control."

"Train services have been suspended immediately due to unforeseen circumstances for the safety of our beloved passengers." "Efforts are being made to restore service," said the company.

Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, had raised the alarm, claiming that an explosive attack had destroyed the rail track during a voyage on Thursday morning, and that passengers had just narrowly spared death.

On Wednesday, October 20, "terrorists" detonated an explosive and opened fire on the train, according to him.
